Digestive System
We have been learning about food chains in class 4. The children have learnt about producers, consumers, predators and prey. They constructed their own food chains in small groups.
PE
Within PE lessons, Year 4 have been working in teams to put into practice a plan for rescuing objects representing sheep and chickens. The scenario for the task was that one sheep and six chickens were stranded on an island that had a raging bush fire. There were two possible routes to rescue them: crossing a deep, wide part of the river with no bridge or boat; or going upstream to cross at a narrower point. Children have been developing their team working skills, map reading skills and they have been learning how to make and apply decisions. The children have really enjoyed carrying out this search and rescue scenario.
Place Value
Class 4 have been using place value boards and counters to partition numbers into their 1000s, 100s, 10s and 1s.
Human Digestive Experiment
We have been learning about the human digestive system in Year 4. We recreated our own journey of food. We placed a banana and a cracker in a bag which represented our stomach. Next, we added water to represent our saliva and orange juice to represent the acid in our stomach. After that, we crushed the materials together to recreate what happens to the food in our stomach. Then, we poured the material into some tights which represented our food moving into our small intestine. We discussed how the liquid that fell out of the tights (small intestine) represents the nutrients and minerals that go into our body. Finally, the remaining material was transferred into a cup which represented the large intestine and pushed out the bottom through a hole to recreate going to the toilet. The children had a fun but messy afternoon!
The Human Digestive System – Teeth
We have been learning about the first part of the human digestive system which is our teeth. Class 4 have learnt about the importance of looking after our teeth, the different types of teeth we have and their functions. The children created incisors, canines, pre molars and molars using playdough to create a set of teeth.
Remembrance Day 2020

Year 4 have been learning how to play the glockenspiel. They learnt how to play jingle bells for our Christmas performance!
Design Technology
Year 4 have been making light up reindeers in DT. The children designed how they wanted their light up reindeer to look before making them. They had lots of fun creating their designs and learning about electrical circuits. Here are the finished products…
Science – States of Matter
Year 4 have been learning about the states of matter. The children have enjoyed working scientifically by grouping and classifying a variety of different materials, exploring the effect of temperature on substances and exploring the temperature at which materials change state.
Design and Technology – Adapting a Recipe
In year 4, we have been working in groups to adapt an existing biscuit recipe. The children had to consider the cost of the ingredients and other expenses against a set budget. The children really enjoyed making and eating their biscuits!
Telling the Time
Year 4 have been carrying out lots of practical activities to support them in learning how to tell the time this week.
Design Technology
Year 4 transformed lollipop sticks, wheels, dowels and straws into a moving car. They used a glue gun to construct the materials, made the launch mechanism, designed and also made the body of the vehicle using nets and they assembled these to the chassis. The children then tested their cars.

The Human Digestive System
We have been learning about the human digestive system and recreated our own journey of food. We used bananas and biscuits in a plastic bag (mouth) with water (saliva) and crushed them up like the teeth would do. We recreated the small intestine using tights and could see how the goodness of the food can be taken and absorbed into the body. We then transferred what was left into a cup (large intestine) until all we had left was waste food! The children had a fun but messy afternoon.
Binchester Roman Fort
Class 4 are learning about why Romans marched through County Durham and found out lots of new things at Binchester Roman Fort. We visited the Commander’s bath house where we could see the hot, warm and cold rooms and discovered the Romans used underfloor heating. The children saw the remains of a Roman road named Dere Street and learned that it would have led the Romans all the way to Hadrian’s Wall. Class 4 made mosaics from tiles, acted as archaeologists by finding Roman artifacts in sand and got to dress up in togas, sandals and helmets. We finished the day by making clay pots. It was a very interesting and enjoyable day.
Tag Rugby Mega Festival
Year 4 went to a tag rugby mega festival as part of the School Games. The children played seven different games linked to tag ruby. This was a great introduction to the sport for the children in Class 4 before they get the chance to play tag rugby in schools’ competition next year. Although it was muddy, the sun was shining and all the children and staff had a fun time at Bishop Barrington.
Moving Monsters
Year 4 have been investigating pneumatic systems in design technology, where air pressure is used to create movement. First, the class experimented with lots of different equipment to create different pneumatic systems which included tubing, syringes, balloons and empty bottles. Each child designed their own monster and decided how their monster would move. Everybody worked extremely hard to make their monsters with some fantastic and original ideas. The children really thought about how a pneumatic system could be used to make a monster move. Great work class 4!

During the first half of the autumn term the children have been studying ‘Ancient Greece’. The children have looked at the timeline of Ancient Greek history, how the Greeks lived and the battle of Sparta and Athens. The children discovered some of the Greek gods and goddesses, they were then able to link these characters to Greek myths. The children particularly enjoyed the myth about the Trojan horse and performed a poem in the style of a rap during their assembly, learning all of the words. A favourite Greek myth of Class 4 was Perseus and Medusa. They were able to learn the script of a short play and act out the myth in their class assembly, which was enjoyed by classes from across the school as well as parents.
Christingles
As part of our Christmas RE topic Year 4 made their own Christingles. They learned about the representation of each part of a Christingle and how this is related to Jesus and light.
Boccia and Kurling
Stuart from Education Enterprise came into school to coach Year 4 in Boccia and Kurling. The children quickly learnt some new skills and were using tactics to win points. Everyone really enjoyed the experience and we are looking forward to the Boccia and Kurling festival in February.
Art
Class 4 completing an observational art lesson this half term.
Year 4 visit Binchester Roman Fort.
Year 4 thoroughly enjoyed their, mostly sunny, visit to Binchester Roman Fort. They visited the remains of Dere Street, an original Roman Road that runs through the middle of the fort. The children explored the remains of the Commander’s house and his private bath house. There was lots to explore, including the cold rooms, hot rooms, furnace rooms and they had access to the underground heating where the pillars remain. We even spotted some Roman footprints in the cement. Before lunch, the children had the opportunity to dress up as Roman soldiers. The helmets were very heavy! Some activities included making mosaic tile pictures, cleaning pots found in real archaeological digs at the fort and archaeological digging in the sand. After lunch in the sunshine, the children explored a second bath house that would have been used by local villagers. They all produced some lovely sketches. The children had lots of fun with the clay, making and decorating pots.
